Study Group

Postby James » Wed Nov 04, 2009 10:40 am

Hi Guys,

I was toying with this idea today... What about we did a study group.

Select a rhythm to study and discuss for 2 months...

We could collect recordings and buy songs from iTunes and dissect explore and share...

What do you think?

sounds cool but it could be kinda hard to agree on what rhythm to discuss. i can see this kinda thing happening:
carl: i want garangedon!
dugafola: yoki is the shiznit
rachel: how about a malian rhythm?

may i suggest we set a rhythm of the month? (we can take requests and vote on next rhythm if need be, but mods get to make final call). once that's out of the way then we can explore different versions of the rhythm, cultural background, microtiming, solo techniques, sangban and dununba variations, breaks and all.

nice idea, james!

I like this idea!! Just hold a pole every other month or so for 3-4 rhythms that the mods pick... that way we can vote.

I see this being a lot of work for some and a lot of gain for others.... but seeing as I'd be mostly gaining, I'm all in!!

Thats more democratic Rhythym, we can vote on what to do. Jez we can even make suggestions on what rhythym would be worth while learning for what reasons etc. I'm seeing some serous team spirit being generated here. Good idea James

And yo kevin i'm gonna gain more than you, ah ha

Agreed to the team spirit thing. I have yet to be involved in an online organization which has the degree of respect and focus as this place.

I like the study group idea, I'll also through out the idea that there is more to the culture than the rhythms, and it might be interesting to discuss some other aspects as well... dununba social groups, initiation, masks... (see bubudi's comment about choosing rhythms)

PS: Great, more projects to get involved with! :flex:

Me too. The only problem I can see is that we might spend two months discussing which rhythm to discuss...

Cheers,

MIchi.

yea, it's a susu rhythm called 'toro sang' (chicken legs). the translation of the song goes: 'he's getting skinny from too much work!'

Let's start throwing out rhytm names and see what comes up. Everyone name 1 (otherwise we'll have loads).

If there's so much enthusiasm that we have too many to vote. I will randomly pick 10 using some method to be disclosed. We could use the honour system and say don't vote for your own suggestion.

We could then take a week to discuss and gather the necessary material and call a start point. Might be nice to tie this to calendar months, but I'm beginning to think that 2 month cycles may be more beneficial as I'm sure we're all busy?

Just my thoughts. What do you guys think?

Hmmm.... so many rhythms, so much to discuss...

I'll vote for Soboninkun, only because I have some cool variations for the dununs that are VERY feel oriented.

I like this idea, and 2-month cycles sound good.

Some of you have much more material (etc.) than I do, so at this point, I'm going to pass on throwing a name into the pool, unless  occurs....

A poll (for choosing) looks like the fairest option.
