Sibo Bangoura "Keyim Ba"

Postby michi » Mon Oct 12, 2009 10:29 pm

Sibo Bangoura (Bangourake's younger brother) has just made his first CD. The official launch will be end of October in Sydney, but he had a box full for sale Epizo's camp.

That's a very nice CD. Quite musical and melodic--the tracks all have vocals, balafon, kora, and/or flute with them, so it isn't just a CD for percussion aficionados with lots of djembe wizardry, but very listenable as music. Yet, the djembe wizardry isn't missing, so there is plenty to be enjoyed in terms of fancy chops.

It's great to see Sibo make his mark and step out from Mohamed's shadow!

Track listing:
  • Wulé
  • Zaouli
  • Fanta
  • Korolon Könön
  • Diyörè
  • Kéyim Ba
  • Möbanya
  • N'yeloborè
  • Walignouma
  • Fama
  • Sabar
  • Féssèhè

Cheers,

Michi.

i listened to this album a month ago. it's good stuff. i'll be getting a copy for sure.

featuring boka camara on every track. i've been told boka wrote all the breaks, too.
i'll add it to the boka discography.

I suspect the easiest thing might be to call him or send him an email. I'll forward his details via PM.

Cheers,

Michi.

boka helped out and deserves special mention (which he gets on the cover), but sibo is the main feature. every single musician on that cd is top class. am getting my copy soon. i had to laugh at the song praising sibo though.

went to the launch on tuesday night and got my copy of the cd. i had a listen through it tonight and i gotta say, the cd sounds awesome. the mix is nicely balanced. i would have liked a bit more singing and instruments through the entire cd. only about half the tracks have that, but they are beautiful songs. the cd is definitely more about the art of djembe, though. boka is laying down some of his best chops ever. this cd is as much his as it is sibo's and even sibo says so. 'when i hear the cd, it's like boka is in front of me', he said on the night.

the concert was good. bangourake was in good form. sibo talked for what seemed like hours about what a great guy boka was and repeated this in the thanks speech towards the end, where he also thanked several other people. then he said 'i don't like to talk much' and everybody was in stitches over that! nearly all of the songs they played were straight off the cd. on the sabar song, pape, tiass and yacou mbaye played proper mbalax to give the sabar rhythm authentic flavour. yacou's dunun playing was totally in the pocket and he must have been working solidly to learn all the rhythms, variations and breaks from sibo (most of them were not standards).

i'll be posting an audio clip soon...

The Cd is class, I can highly recommend it.

I find the song on the first track Wulé TOTAALLLLYYY addictive. Seriously it's been my head for 5 days now.

That and I keep walking around singing about Fanta Kouyate, his mother.

There is stonking djembe on this, but it gets brownie points for having full instruments, like bala, Kora and wicked singing, which means that I can listen to it while my girlfriend is in the same room !
