Sega Sidibe instructional - Sega Kan Do

Postby bubudi » Tue Mar 16, 2010 8:28 am

at last the long awaited book, cd & dvd by the malian master, sega kan do (the voice of sega).

segakando.jpg
segakando.jpg (12.1 KiB) Viewed 646 times

book features a brief presentation of mali, socio-cultural context of the djembe and its origins until the present day, a biography of sega sidibe, explanation of djembe playing techniques, notation of some malian rhythms in easy to read notation and translation of traditional chants in both french and english. 136 pages.

cd is divided into two parts. the first part features ensemble playing, simulating a traditional fete where sega sidibe interprets the rhythms together with 5 musicians and singers. the second part has just the rhythms, allowing the learner to practice solo phrases.

dvd features different solo phrases played by sega sidibe and an interview with him.

sorry, no list of rhythms yet. i'll post one when i get this info.

looks like a 'must get' package.

price: €34

Thanks Bubudi! I love Sega Sidibé. At least his style of playing. Someone know his c.d. Njaga? it was recorded by a Dutch guy, Rutger van de Ree. Last weekend I met Sega in Amsterdam on a workshop. I am sorry to say I left the workshop before it was finished. He is a great player, but sometimes hard to understand as teacher...... But definitely someone to pay respect to, because he is a true keeper of tradition.

looks like:
diansa
madan
mendiani
garankefoly
dembafoly
sunun
suku
ngrinba (n'gri/wassolonka)
soli

DAMN! $77 USD shipped.

he's already put out diansa, madan, mendiani, garankefoly, suku, and dembafoly in instructional form in the past although those are most likely OOP right now. I'm sure there'll be lots of overlap but with some new stuff thrown in plus the new rhythms.

the DVD was the deal maker for me!

At least you could buy it. I can't because the silly shopping cart software doesn't know that Australia is a country and makes it impossible to enter a correct address...

come to think of it...my address didn't turn up correct either.

o well...all they need from us is the zip code and country and it should get routed correctly.

Right. I can't enter my country though, so I don't like my chances of it ending up in the correct one

I've sent email to them to see what the story is. I'll be cranky if they don't ship to Australia... Anyone know whether this is available from sellers elsewhere?

Cheers,

Hmmm... 21.20 € shipping charge. That's US$ 29.20 for a large padded envelope. The actual postage cost is much less. (I just checked the postage from Germany, and it's 6.00 €.)

I just wish all these mail order places wouldn't charge like wounded bulls for shipping. They'd probably sell more stuff that way too...

Cheers,

Michi.

well there is a book, cd and dvd. due to the book, it might be in the next weight category. still excessive though. but so far they're the only supplier, so unless you want to wait for someone like drumskulls to get it, you'll have to bite the bullet.

Yeah. I looked up the rate for up to 500g from Germany, which is 6.00 €. If you go up to the next category, it's 12 €.

I've bitten it...

Yes, I know I looked up German postage rates because I don't speak French, and I figured that the postage rates would be similar, especially for long-distance stuff like mail to Australia. I might be naive though...

i got it yesterday.

i have only listened to the CD so far. each rhythm has at least 2 and sometimes 3 distinct songs...all translated from bamanakan to french and english. that's very nice. ensemble on the CD is jembe accomp, sangban, sega solo and 2-3 singers. garankefoly has a dununba added in.

book content...haven't really flipped through it. it's in western notation which i dislike. there are notations for "generic solo" phrases and the function they serve in the rhythm ie to increase tempo etc.

haven't popped in the DVD yet.
