I would throw a vote in for Yankadi as well. What about Yankadi-Makru? I've always played those together in dance classes and workshops...

actually there were 2 nominations for yankadi, one for kuku, so i'd say what happened is those who nominated then voted suit. i'm sure we'll get round to kuku one of these days.

Yankadi not so popular then...

Anyone know what the word means? I saw a few hair salons and restaurants with names like "Yankadi Café" etc spread throughout Mali, Burkina and Senegal. Strange because it's a Susu rhythm but maybe the word is common throughout the various mandé languages...

I've been pushing myself to come up with something interesting to ask in order to stimulate the discussion but not much is coming to mind.

One random thing which entered my head was that on FK's course one of the dance teachers was Susu and had danced in the ballets. She decided to teach Yankadi for one dance class but had to abandon it because the drummers couldn't play it properly! The guys were pretty much all Malinké and seemed to be unfamiliar and uninterested in the Susu rhythm. Eventually she decided to teach Soko instead.

That's unusual. Yankadi/Macru has become very popular and is widely played by the Malinké. From what I've heard, it would be one of the most well-known rhythms and in pretty much every musician's repertoire...

Cheers,

Michi.
