So called "african swing" or "playing in between" is not something exclusive, found only in african traditional music. This is a misconception. It is used also in jazz (especially "swing"), funk, hip hop and other modern musical genres, which are actually strongly infuenced with african traditional rhythmical heritage.
Listen carefully to ride pattern in the third, "straight" variation . It is played "straight" but pushing accents very much toward the triplet time signature.
