among the baga, women play the matimbo drums in traditional initiation and funeral ceremonies. the bowl of the drum is very similar in shape to a djembe, but the skin is held and tuned with pegs. the bases of these drums are ornate statues associated with female spirits. the nalu also have this drum which is played on the same occasions. both the baga and nalu live around boke on the north coast of guinea. the nalu also live in the southwest of guinea-bissau.
