When you guys talk about 'feeling' in playing, I think you are referring to the shuffle pattern that is rhythmically not quite eighth note or triplet based, but somewhere in between. Am I mistaken?

Yeah man, that's the idea. Some people call it "micro-timing" but for me it's just another way of saying feeling. I think e2c is right in that it's not exactly a shuffle, but just an overall rhythmic sense. There are a number of patterns that he's playing there. His fingertips convey the feeling of the bells or karignan, if we were to hear the whole ensemble playing the rhythm. It's a little bit like the clave of afro-caribbean music. That timing takes a lot of practice.

But did you see the one guy with the djembe pointing the wrong way? Technique is one thing, I'm not sure how he could let the guy get away with that...it looks painful to me.

Yeah, I agree. I'd say his strong suit is definitely not training others. It might be generous to say that he hasn't been working with them for very long? Maybe there's a reason why he's so good at playing solo...

I guess my thought re. the class video is that playing music well is one skill, teaching is another. Not everyone can do well at both. (And maybe he's very new to teaching? Just speculating; I have no clue, really...)

@ Bubudi: The rythm he is playing is not called soboninkun, but 'sobolikan'. Which means 'la course de chevaux' for sure. I guess he's right, after all..
