I'm wondering if there is a correct way that the djembe should face. I mean one way if I rub my hand over the top, it is rough, and the other way it is smooth. Which way should it face towards me or does it not matter?

Normally, people play the skin where the shoulders of the goat used to be. The spine should be pointing straight at you, with the grain of the skin pointing away from you. So, when you run your hand over the skin away from you, it should feel smooth.
